Part 5: Saffron City Gym

Game Corner

Exit the gym and head to the top floor of the Celadon Condomoniums, adjacent to the Department Store. Here you'll find 3 Health Candies. Now, enter the Celadon Department Store. Head to the third floor and talk to the clerk to get TM03 - Helping Hand. Heal up and head to the Game Corner. You'll see Jessie and James here and they'll spill the beans on how to access Team Rocket's Hideout. Approach the Team Rocket Grunt and defeat his Lv. 29 Raticate in battle. Push the switch behind the poster and enter Team Rocket's Hideout to the left.

Team Rocket's Hideout

Head left to defeat a Grunt and pick up 5 Ultra Balls. Head south and speak to the female Grunt to get the Team Rocket Set of clothing. Defeat (or avoid) the Grunt to the right and pick up 3 Mighty Candies. Head down the stairs to the lower floor and defeat another Grunt here.

In the next puzzle area, take the lower tile pointing left to get a Nugget. Then head down to pick up an Awakening and take the higher tile pointing right to find TM05 - Rest. Take the tile pointing down and then the closest one pointing right. Then take the closet one pointing left and then the lower one pointing left. Wrap around here to find a PP Up. Then follow the tiles out of the lower right side. In this room, you'll find two Grunts, a Hyper Potion, and 5 Great Balls.

Exit this room and head back to the top part of this room and down a floor. Head south defeating the Grunt and picking up TM20 - Dark Pulse. You'll find a Revive to the left as well. To the south is another tile puzzle. Take the tile pointing left and then the tile pointing right to get to an X Speed. Take the second highest tile pointing right to get to a Rare Candy. Then go to the beginning of the puzzle, take the same route but this time the third highest tile that's pointing right. Now you'll be at the bottom of the room. Defeat the Team Rocket Grunt and head down the stairs.

In this first area you can nab a Hyper Potion and a PP Up. There's a Team Rocket Grunt with a Lv. 29 Grimer standing in front of a table. The Grunt will throw the Lift Key onto th wall. You'll need to grab the blue chair and push it in front of the vent. You'll get to control your partner as they crawl into the vent and navigate to the Lift Key. Now that we have the key, head to the elevator in the room with the first tile puzzle. Choose "B4F".

First head left for an Elixir. Then confront Jessie and James. No matter what you answer, you'll need to do a double battle against Team Rocket Jessie and James. They have a Lv. 32 Weezing and a Lv. 32 Arbok. You'll be thrown into another battle straightaway against Team Rocket Admin Archer who has a Lv. 33 Weezing and a Lv. 33 Golbat. After defeating him you'll need to defeat the Team Rocket Boss Giovanni. He has a Lv. 35 Persian and a Lv. 35 Rhyhorn. You'll get the Silph Scope for winning.

Pokemon Tower

Exit the Game Corner and speak to the man next to the balloons. He'll teach your partner the secret technique Sky Dash. Use this to fly back to Lavendar Town. Speak with Blue outside the Pokemon Tower before entering it once again. Make your way to the top where the giant ghost was before. When you get back, you'll find that the giant ghost is just the Cubone's mother. Pick up the Rare Candy and go to the floor above.

On this floor you'll need to defeat Jessie and James once again. They have a Lv. 34 Weezing and a Lv. 34 Arbok. After defeating them, speak to Mr. Fuji. He'll take you to his home and give you the Poke Flute.

Silph Co.

Now leave Lavendar Town to the west and cross Route 8 until you get to the guarded gate. The guard will ask for a drink of your Tea and then let you through into Saffron City. Head a little south and west and you'll run into Jessie and James once again. Follow them into Silph Co. and you'll be joined by Blue and your rival. You'll need to battle Blue. He has a Lv. 38 Exeggutor, and a Lv. 40 Charizard. You can also pick up an X Sp. Atk on this floor.

There are two potential strategies for Silph Co.: You can either explore everything before defeating Giovanni to gain the most expirience and fight the most trainers, or you can get the Key Card and battle Giovanni as soon as possible and collect all the goodies later without worrying about Team Rocket Grunts. The rest of the walkthrough is just one potential route of many, so use it to take whichever route fits your playstyle.

2F & 8F

Head up to the second floor. Defeat the two Grunts in this room and Scientist Jerry. You can also pick up an X Attack and a Super Potion. Then take the first portal on the left. This will take you to 8F. Pick up the X Attack and defeat the two grunts on this floor. Take the portal closest to the one you took to get in if you want a Revive. You'll need to defeat Scientist Parker to get to it. The other portal in this room will take you back to 2F.

3F

From 2F, head up the stairs to 3F. There's only one Grunt to defeat on this floor for now. Take the portal in the upper-right corner and speak to the lady here to get TM42 - Self-Destruct. Now, take the portal on the upper-left side of the room on 3F. You're now on 5F. Head left for a team battle with Team Rocket Admin Archer, a Grunt, and your rival. They have a Lv. 37 Electrode, a Lv. 34 Muk, a Lv. 37 Weezing, a Lv. 37 Golbat, and a Lv. 34 Raticate. After winning, you'll find the Card Key.

5F

With the Card Key in hand, we can open doors. Start with the one on your left. Defeat Scientist Beau and pick up the Max Ether. You can also defeat Juggler Dalton and two Grunts and pick up a Guard Spec., TM54 - Flash Cannon, 5 Poke Balls, and a Nugget.

7F

Take the portal on the upper-right corner to get to 7F. Pick up the 3 Smart Candies, TM34 - Dragon Pulse, PP Up, while defeating Scientist Joshua and two Grunts. Speak to the man sitting in the chair in the last room that you need the Key Card for and he'll give you a Lv. 34 Lapras. Take the portal back down to 5F.

Take the portal left of the elevator back to 3F for a Max Lure and battle against Scientist Jose. Take the portal in this room to get back to the other side of 7F. Your rival will keep Mr. Archer busy while you take the other portal. Here you'll be greeted once again by Jessie and James. They'll have a Lv. 36 Weezing and a Lv. 36 Arbok. Defeat them and heal up if you need to.

Boss Giovanni

Another battle with Team Rocket Boss Giovanni will take place. This time he'll have a Lv. 39 Persian, a Lv. 39 Rhyhorn, and a Lv. 39 Nidoqueen. After defeating him, speak with the Silph Co. President to get your Master Ball. We can head for the gym now, but there's still some more goodies to pick up in Silph Co. if you're interested. Take the portals back to 3F and then enter the portal in the room to the left.

9F & 4F

You'll be on 9F. On this floor you'll find a Revive, 3 Ultra Balls, 3 Great Balls, 3 Poke Balls, and a portal back to 5F. Instead, take the elevator to 4F. Here you can find a Full Heal, an Escape Rope, a Star Piece, 5 Great Balls, a Revive, and a Dire Hit.

6F, 10F, & 11F

Head to 6F where you can find a Max Repel, Hyper Potion, Super Potion, and X Sp. Atk. Afteward, head up to 10F where we can still pick up a Full Heal, Max Revive, Rare Candy, and TM37 - Flamethrower. Finally, head back to 11F and pick up the Max Elixir on the right side. We've now obtained everything in Silph Co.!

Saffron City Gym

Saffron City Gym is in the northern part of town. You will need a Pokemon that is at least Lv. 45 before you can take on the challenge, so you might have to do some grinding. Either way, this gym is Psychic-type so we recommended Dark, Bug, or Ghost to give you the best advantage.

This gym uses teleporters. Take the first teleporter and then the one to the bottom-left. Defeat Psychic Johan if you'd like. Take the top-right teleporter this time. Then take the bottom-right to battle Ace Trainer Amanda. Take the bottom-right two more times to battle Ace Trainer Cameron. Take the bottom-right once more to battle Channeler Imari. Take the top-left to battle Psychic Preston. Now take the top-left teleporter to get to the gym leader.

Gym Leader Sabrina specializes in Psychic-type Pokemon. Dark types are especially useful here. She has a Lv. 43 Mr. Mime, a Lv. 43 Slowbro, a Lv. 43 Jynx, and a Lv. 44 Alakazam. She has a lot of ways to put you to sleep, so be aware of that. She's a bit tougher than previous gyms, so make sure you come prepared and are well-leveled with type advantage. When you defeat her, you'll get the Marsh Badge, and TM33 - Calm Mind.
