Chapter 7: Icirrus Gym
Route 7
After leaving Mistralton Gym, you will be stopped by N. He is apparently a Pokémon whisperer and will speak to your Pokémon to learn things about you. He also makes the mistake of reavealing his "evil" plan to resurrect the legendary Dragon-type beasts with a pair of stones. Afterward you can heal up in town and then head back onto Route 7.
When you come to the fork in the road, head right this time. Continue further to the right and you'll get an Xtransceiver call from your Mom who's just checking in. Continue over the patch of the grass to the right (there's a trainer on the walkway you can battle or avoid) to pick up TM81 - X-Scissor. Then continue north to the next area, Twist Mountain.
Twist Mountain
Head towards the stairs here where you will be stopped by Cheren for a battle. He has a Lv. 33 Unfezant, a Lv. 33 Liepard, a Lv. 33 Simisage/Simisear/Simipour, and a Lv. 35 Dewott/Servine/Pignite. After you defeat Cheren, Pokémon League Champion Alder will show up to give some advice and more importantly HM03 - Surf. This is a powerful move in its own right but will also allow you to cross bodies of water outside of battle.
Continue ahead into the cave; there's one trainer you'll need to battle along the way. Straight away you'll run into Clay and Cheren who don't say much important. Exit to the right and you'll find yourself on a ledge. Head all the way to the north to find a Revive. Then go south and all the way to the right to find a Full Heal. Then enter the mountain to the south.
There are a few trainers you can battle in here if you'd like. In the middle path to the north there is nothing outside but an Ace Trainer to battle. Continue to the right to progress. Once back outside head north along this ledge and enter the cave again. There are little piles of dirt in here and some of them contain either hidden items or trainers. If you head to the far right you can pick up a Moon Stone. Go through the south exit (there's an optional trainer in the dirt piles) and then exit to the left.
Back outside, head north to pick up a Max Potion. Then head back to the west and you can pick up an Ether before heading back into the cave. Once inside you can take the little path in the middle to get a Nugget and the path to the left past a trainer to find a PP Up. Then exit the cave to the right.
You'll now find yourself in an open area in the center with many possible paths. The first thing to do is defeat the nearby doctor so that you can heal your team whenever you need. If you are looking for the fastest option to the exit take the lower north-east door. Otherwise there are a few goodies to find first. If you enter the door in the center on the lowest level you can find TM91 - Flash Cannon. Take the right most door to find a Metal Coat.
Take the highest door in the north-east and head down to the lower level. Head to the right here and defeat the Ace Trainer to continue ahead. The lower left path leads to TM90 - Substitute. You can then hop over this ledge and head down a level (this is the same path that taking the lower north-east door gets you to). Here you'll find Cheren and a member of Team Plasma to the right. Team Plasma will mention that they are heading to a tower and then run off without giving you much trouble.
Icirrus City
Exit the mountain and you'll find Cedric waiting for you. He'll tell you about Dragonspiral Tower, which is surely what Team Plasma was referring to. You'll now find yourself in the charming town of Icirrus City. There's a large pond here that freezes in the winter, so you can either surf across it or slide across it. If you enter the building to the south-east you can speak to the woman inside for a RageCandyBar.
Head left past the dancing circle to find a Rare Candy. North of this is the Pokémon Fan Club building. If you speak to the man in here and show him a Pokémon with a high friendship value, he'll give you the Exp. Share. In this generation, the Exp. Share is a held item given to a single Pokémon to share Exp. Points with them even if they aren't in battle. If you enter the house to the north-east you will take a "Pep Quiz" that will reward you an Antidote for correctly answering the question.
Icirrus Gym
You are now free to take on the Icirrus City Gym. It features Ice-type Pokémon, which are weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel. Your team should be in the high 30s at this point, so train up on Twist Mountain if you need to, Otherwise enter the gym built into the side of the mountain on the north-west side of town. Speak to the guide to get a Fresh Water as always. This gym features an ice puzzle where you need to slide around the correct path and use the obstacles to stop your momentum to change directions.
Start by heading straight forward and to the right when you get stopped by a rock. You'll be on the right side of the gym and need to battle Black Belt Grant and his two Lv. 35 Cubchoo and Lv. 35 Cryogonal. Now continue ahead and step on the switch to change the direction of an obstacle. Head to the left and you'll be on some more dry ground where you can either battle or avoid Battle Girl Miriam who has a Lv. 37 Cryogonal.
Continue to the right using the icy slide and you'll need to face Black Belt Kendrew and his Lv. 37 Cubchoo. You then want to head right and up and follow the rocks to the dry patch to the north where you'll need to defeat Battle Girl Mikiko who has a Lv. 36 Cubchoo and a Lv. 36 Vanillish. From this patch you can head south and use the obstacle to reach the dry patch to the right. You can then head into the obstacle using the arrow patch to arrive at the dry patch below. From there head straight up to step on the switch. Then head up to the dry patch to the north and use the arrow patch into the obstacle to reach the platform to the left.
Take the stairs up to the next area and defeat Battle Girl Chandra who uses two Lv. 36 Vanillish. From here you'll want to follow the two arrow patches into the obstacle to land on the blue patches. Then you can head straight up to the next dry patch and face Black Belt Thomas who has a Lv. 36 Vanillish and a Lv. 36 Cubchoo. You can then press the switch here and then use the next two arrow patches to reach the blue patch to the north. From there you have a straight path to the gym leader.
Gym Leader Brycen
If you need to bail out and heal before taking on the gym leader, you can do so with a slide to the left. Otherwise it's time to take on the Ice-type specialist Brycen. He uses a Lv. 37 Vanillish, a Lv. 37 Cryogonal, and a Lv. 39 Beartic. The main things to be weary of in this battle are his ability to freeze you and confuse you with Beartic's Swagger. He also has two Hyper Potions he'll use if he can. Beyond that this is a pretty easy battle if you the type advantage, as his entire team is pure Ice-type.
After defeating Brycen you will get the Freeze Badge, which means that Pokémon up to Lv. 80 will obey you. He'll also give you his favorite, TM79 - Frost Breath.
