Chapter 12: Post Game
There are a few things left you can do in the post game now that we've found all seven sages and explored the rest of Unova, although it's not a structured experience. The rest of this guide will give our recommendations on what to do and a general order, though most can be done in any order. We'll start with catching the rest of the available Lengedary Pokémon.
Catching Cobalion
To catch the first of the Swords of Justice Legendary trio, Cobalion, fly to Driftveil City and then head west onto Route 6. From here continue along the route until you get to the house with the trainer tip sign outside. Head east in the tall grass here until it seems like a dead end. Surf on the water here to the east and you'll find the entrance to Mistralton Cave.
You'll want to use the move Flash inside the cave to make it easier to navigate. From here you can follow the path of the cave, which requires you to use Strength and push various boulders into their respective holes. After pushing all boulders on the first floor, take the stairs up to the next floor. On this floor there are more boulders to push and if you head north to the top ledge of the cave you can also find TM80 - Rock Slide. Head up the set of the stairs on this floor as well.
You'll find yourself in the Guidance Chamber, which is fully lit. If you speak to the old man to the right he will tell you the legend of Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion and that one of them is in this very cave! Complete the rest of the boulder puzzles in this room and then head to the northwest corner to find Cobalion. Make sure to save before the encounter!
Cobalion will be a Lv. 42 Steel/Fighting type. We could have encountered it much earlier in the game, so you should be pretty overleveled at this point. The best strategy to catch it is to apply a status condition like paralysis and then weaken it until it's health bar is red. Because we are in a cave, Dusk Balls are the best choice, so make sure to bring plenty along. After you've caught Cobalion the old man will come congratulate you and let you know that Terrakion and Virizion are probably available to find and capture now as well.
Catching Terrakion
With Cobalion in hand, we can now find and catch the other two legendaries in the trio. We'll start with Terrakion, who can now be found by flying to the Pokémon League. From here head south to the top of Victory Road and go through the cave entrance to the right. Take the left path down the stairs and left over the boulder to find a brand new cave entrance. Enter this Trial Chamber and you'll encounter Terrakion.
Terrakion will be a Lv. 42 Rock/Fighting type. The strategy is the same as Cobalion, you should be overleved so just apply a status condition and weaken it as much as as you can. Keep tossing Dusk Balls at it until it's caught. The only thing to watch out for is the fairly powerful Sacred Sword move, so make sure you've got some healing items if the battle extends for too long.
Catching Virizion
The final member of the Swords of Justice trio is Virizion. To find it you can fly all the way back to Nacrene City. Head west into Pinwheel Forest and take the road to the north until you see a break in the fence to your right. Head northeast in this area (there is also TM 22 - Solarbeam nearby if you haven't picked it up already) and through the log to the north. Just north of this you'll find an opening in the trees that wasn't there before.
Enter the trees to find Rumination Field. Here you'll see Virizion who is waiting for battle. Make sure to save before the encounter. Virizion will be a Lv. 42 Grass/Fighting type. You'll want to follow the same process of applying a status condition and weaking Virizion as much as you can. However, Virizion unfortunately knows Giga Drain, so it will heal itself requiring you to manage it's health much more often. This battle is also not in a cave like the others, so you're better off using Ultra Balls instead of Dusk Balls unless it's at night.
Catching Tornadus/Thundurus
Depending on the version of the game you're playing, you'll either be able to catch Tornadus (Black) or Thundurus (White). They are roaming legendaries which means you'll need to search around Unova and encounter them randomly. Before you start looking for them however, you'll need to visit Route 7 and head northeast to the second house you come across. It will begin to rain very heavily here and an old lady will take you inside to shelter you. She'll tell you about Tornadus or Thundurus and how they are causing this nasty weather. When you head back outside, you will briefly see Tornadus or Thundurus before they fly away.
Tornadus/Thundurus is now roaming around Unova and you'll need to go find them. In the morning they can be found on the southern routes, while in the evening they can be found on the northern routes. The route that they are on will always be covered in heavy rain. You can sometimes use the electronic boards in the route gates to figure out which route they are on based on weather. Once you are on the correct route, you'll want to have a lead Pokémon below Lv. 40, but above the level of the Pokémon on the route if possible. You can then use a repel to guarantee that your next wild encounter will be the legendary.
Tornadus/Thundurus will always flee from battle after the first turn. This means that you'll need to use a move like Mean Look to trap it if you want to battle and capture it normally. However this is the only roaming Pokémon, so it's not a bad idea to just use your Master Ball for this encounter.
Catching Landorus
Tornadus/Thundurus actually come in a trio with the elusive Landorus that protects all of Unova. However, in order to catch Landorus you will need to have both Torandus and Thundurus in your party. This means that you'll need to trade with someone with the opposite version of the game. If you are able to do so, you can find Landorus in the Abundant Shrine. It can be found in the northwest corner of Route 14 and is reachable by surfing and climbing the waterfalls at the beginning of the route.
In the Abundant Shrine there are several trainers with high level Pokémon that you'll need to defeat to clear a path. You can also find some pretty good items around here, including TM35 - Flamethrower in the southwest. To the north in the center of the grassy area you will find a little shrine building. If you interact with it and have both Tornadus and Thundurus in your team, a Lv. 70 Landorus will appear and battle you.
Catching Kyurem
The final legendary Pokémon in the game can be found in the Giant Chasm area. You can reach it by flying to Lacunosa Town and then heading north on Route 13. There is a cave you can enter here with many goodies inside. When you reach the end of the cave you'll exit into a forested area. In the center of this area is a small lake. When you approach the lake the entire area will instantly freeze over.
Continue north in this frozen area and you'll find another cave entrance. Inside you'll find the legendary beast Kyurem. It's a Lv. 75 Dragon/Ice type. You can use standard techniques for catching it, the catch rate isn't too bad. Because it's in a cave, Dusk Balls are generally your best option.
Catching Volcarona
If you recall in the last chapter, we discoved the location of Volcarona while finding Sage Ryoku. It was a bit overleveld at the time, but now is a good time to go pick it up. It's a single static encounter and one of two ways to get it in the game (the other being evolving a Larvesta). You can find the entrance to its lair at the bottom of Relic Castle. Volcarona is a Bug/Fire type and will be Lv. 70.
Elite Four Rematches
With the National Pokédex in hand, you can now have a rematch against the elite four and champion. There are much more challenging battles, as each member has a full team of six Pokémon, including some from past generations. Their levels are also in the low 70s, so make sure you go in prepared. This is also the only way to get a full battle against Champion Alder, since your last battle was interrupted. There are no rewards for defeating the elite four again, but it's a great challenge and a good way to level your Pokémon. Check out our Elite Four guide for full details on the rematch teams.
Morimoto Battle
A little easter egg and one of the harder battles in the game is against GameFreak Morimoto. You can find him in Castelia City in the Game Freak building. He has a Lv. 75 Liepard, a Lv. 75 Simipour, a Lv. 75 Simisear, a Lv. 75 Simisage, a Lv. 75 Swoobat, and a Lv. 77 Zebstrika. He can be battled daily anytime after you've beaten the game. This is a great way to level up your Pokémon.
Cynthia Battle
The hardest trainer battle in the game is against the champion of the Sinnoh region, Cynthia. She can be found in a house in Undella Town, detailed in the previous chapter. Your first battle against her can be done anytime, but afterward you can only rematch her in the Spring. She has a Lv. 75 Spiritomb, a Lv. 75 Eelektross, a Lv. 75 Milotic, a Lv. 75 Braviary, a Lv. 75 Lucario, and a Lv. 77 Garchomp.
Complete the National Pokédex
The final thing to do in the game (besides enjoying the Battle Subway and various rematches) is complete the National Pokédex. It's no easy feat, as it requires transferring Pokémon from previous generations in addition to trading from the opposite version of the game you are playing. Notably, event-only Pokémon do not count towards completing this Pokédex. There is not a huge reward for accomplishing this either, but you do get a star on your trainer card and a diploma from Game Freak.
