Chapter 7: Cinnabar Island Gym
Part 7: Cinnabar Island Gym
Optional Goodies
Now that we can surf, we've got quite a few options to explore and goodies to pick up. Most of these are optional, so if you're only interested in progressing, skip to the section on Route 21. Otherwise, we are going to explore the Seafoam Islands and the Power Plant to catch Articuno and Zapdos.
Fly to Cerulean City. Stock up on Ultra Balls if you're running low, this will be your last opportunity before attempting to catch Zapdos. Head east onto Route 10 until you can surf on the water. Take this canal to the south and hop off and battle Poke Maniac Mark. Afterward, pick up the Thunder Stone to the right of the building. Enter the Power Plant when you're ready.
Power Plant
Head north to find a Max Revive. You can also battle Coach Trainer Mable and her Lv. 44 Omastar, Lv. 45 Aerodactyl, and Lv. 44 Kabutops. She'll reward you with 5 Rare Candies. Head south and pick up the X Sp. Def, and another Rare Candy. East of this area you'll find TM38 - Thunder. You'll also see an upside-down Pokeball here. This is actually an Electrode. You'll need to battle it before you can catch it, just like we did with Snorlax.
Head back northeast to find a Max Potion. Then backtrack a little and go to the far east side of the room and begin heading north through the hallway. In this first room you'll find a Max Potion and a Thunder Stone. Further along the hallway you can enter the small room to get a Paralyze Heal. In the next room you'll find the first Legendary of the game.
Catching Zapdos
We recommend saving your game before attempting this battle. If you're not able to catch it now, you won't be able to attempt to catch Zapdos again until after defeating the Elite Four. Approach Zapdos when you're ready. You'll have 5 minutes to defeat this Lv. 50 Zapdos before you can try to catch it. Catching Zapdos works like any other Pokemon, throw Ultra Balls at it until it's caught. We don't recommend using your Master Ball for this one, we were able to catch Zapdos with Ultra Balls on the second throw. From here, we're ready to head south onto Route 19.
Route 19
Head south to the beach and you'll run into Jessie and James once again. This time, they'll simply give you a pair of Gold Teeth. Head back into town and jump off the cliff to the east. Enter the first house here and give the warden his Gold Teeth. As a reward, he'll give you the Warden Set set of clothing and teach your partner the secret technique Strong Push.
Now head back south and pick up the Full Heal and then battle Swimmer Reece and Swimmer Richard. Surf south from here using Sea Skim. You'll run into 5 trainers in a row if you continue south: Beauty Alice, Swimmer Axle, Swimmer David, Beauty Connie, and Beauty Anya.
Seafoam Islands
Head west onto Route 20 and battle Swimmer Douglas. To the south of him is Swimmer Darrin. A little further west of them you can battle Beauty Shirley. You'll then arrive on the first of the Seafoam Islands.
Enter the cave and head to the right, using Strong Push to push the block in the hole here. Head back and pick up the Ice Heal on the ledge. Battle Coach Trainer Yas who has a Lv. 46 Jolteon, a Lv. 47 Flareon, and a Lv. 46 Vaporeon. You'll be rewarded with 5 Rare Candies. And then head east and pick up the Escape Rope. Continue east, once again pushing the boulder into the hole (you'll need to push it to the south once first). Now take the ladder near the Coach Trainer.
Pick up the Super Repel to the south and the Max Potion to the north. Head all the way to the east and push the boulder down the hole. Take the ladder closest to you down a floor. Head south and pick up TM55 - Ice Beam. Take the next ladder to your left down a floor. You'll find a X Speed here.
Head back north and surf here. You'll be pushed into a new area. Hop onto the land and grab the Big Pearl here. Continue north and pick up another Big Pearl and take the ladder on the right side of the room back up a floor. Pick up the Super Repel here and then take the only ladder up a floor. You'll need to drop in the hole here, which will bring you back to the bottom floor water area.
Make your way all the way back to the second floor from the top , and then drop through the hole furthest to the east. Push the boulder into the hole here. Now go back to the top floor, and take the ladder furthest east up a floor. Pick up the 5 Great Balls. Push the boulder through the hole, drop through the same hole, and then repeat this process again. This will block the current here, so you can now surf freely.
Hop onto the land to the west, grab the Super Lure to the north and the Hyper Potion to the south. There are four boulders in the south area. Push the left-most one into the hole that it's closest to. There are two side-by-side, push the right one up twice. You can now push the left one into the closest hole here. Drop down the hole and you can now surf north.
Catching Articuno
You'll arrive on a platform with Articuno. You can pick up the Big Pearl here. It's a good idea to save before attempting to catch this Legendary Pokemon, because you only get one chance until after you've beaten the Elite Four. Just like with Zapdos, you'll have 5 minutes to defeat Articuno before you'll get to catch it. Just keep throwing Ultra Balls until you've caught it. It shouldn't take too many.
Surf south to the other platform, now head west to the other area that you can surf in. On the east side, pick up the 3 Ultra Balls. Take the ladder here up a floor. Grab the Ice Stone and take another ladder up a floor. Pick up the Super Lure and head up via the ladder once again. You can now exit the cave to battle Picnicker Irene and pick up the Heart Scale.
Route 20
From here, surf west onto Route 20. You'll quickly run into Beauty Hansol and Swimmer Dean to the north. Hop onto the island to pick up the 3 Ultra Balls and defeat Bird Keeper Roger. Stay in the water to battle Beauty Nora and Beauty Melissa. Now hop onto each island to battle Picnicker Missy and Ace Trainer Marty and pick up the Max Repel. With everything complete on this route, we can head west onto Cinnabar Island. You have another opportunity to head straight to the gym here, or you can fly to Pallet Town and complete Route 21 first.
Route 21
From Pallet Town, use Sea Skim to surf to the south onto Route 21. Hop onto the island here to battle Fisherman Ronald and Coach Trainer Pam. She has a Lv. 44 Machoke, a Lv. 44 Jynx, and a Lv. 45 Kangaskhan. As a reward, you'll receive TM35 - Ice Punch. On the island to the right, battle Fisherman Wade and pick up a Hyper Potion.
You'll find another island with Roughneck Martin. In the water nearby, you can battle Swimmer Spencer and Swimmer Jack. Hop on this island to battle Fisherman Nolan and pick up the Water Stone. On the neighboring island is Sailor Claude. Back west a bit you'll find Swimmer Roland in the water and Swimmer Jerome further south. Pick up the PP Up from the final island and you'll arrive at Cinnabar Island.
Cinnabar Island
After healing up, head to the building to the left of the Pokemon Center, Cinnabar Lab. In the hallway to the right, enter the second door. Speak to the scientist at the computer to get TM02 - Taunt. In the third room, speak to the scientist in the corner to convert your fossil into a Pokemon. Exit this building and head north. Pick up the Antidote and enter the building covered in foliage.
Pokemon Mansion
1F
This is the Pokemon Mansion. Stay on the first floor and enter the room on the top-left. Here you'll find a Max Repel. Then push the secret switch on the statue with the glowing eyes. Enter the next room for a Max Elixir and pick up the Max Lure from under the table in the final room on this floor. Use the stairs to head to the second floor.
2F
On this floor, take the stairs right away to the next floor. Battle Burglar Simon and pick up the Rare Candy. Now head back down to the second floor. Push the secret switch and then head south to pick up a Max Ether and battle Burglar Arnie. Further south in a room to the left you can pick up the PP Up and 3 Ultra Balls in the hall to the right.
Head to the right side of the floor and grab the Max Revive from the upper room and an Escape Rope from the lower. Hit the secret switch again and enter the top-left room to battle Coach Trainer Rita who has a Lv. 46 Graveler, a Lv. 47 Poliwrath, and a Lv. 46 Dugtrio. You'll get TM22 - Rock Slide if you take her down. Head up the stairs here.
3F
Pick up the Full Heal in this room and TM21 - Foul Play in the room to the right. Push the secret switch and then battle Scientist Braydon and pick up an X Accuracy to the right. Take the stairs down to Battle Ace Trainer Louis and pick up a Hyper Potion. Take the stairs back up, then head to the center of the room and take the ladder down two floors to find 5 Silver Razz Berries. Battle Scientist Ted and grab the Fire Stone. Head down the stairs.
B1F
Battle Burglar Lewis and then pick up TM52 - Sludge Bomb and flip the switch in the room the south. Grab the Max Potion to the left and back track to the door that was previously closed. Head north and battle Scientist Ivan. Rest in one of the beds here to heal up if you'd like. Then flip the switch on the statue. Head left, grabbing the Rare Candy from the room above along the way. In these rooms, pick up a Max Elixir and then the Secret Key. Leave the mansion by heading up a floor and using the pad to the right.
Cinnabar Island Gym
With the Secret Key in hand, we're finally ready to tackle Cinnabar Island Gym. It's a Fire-type gym, so a Water or Ground type is recommended. Enter the gym and speak to Gym Leader Blaine. He'll ask you a series of questions with the following answers:
- Q: Which of these is the Spitfire Pokemon? A: Magmar.
- Q: How many Gym Badges certified by the Pokemon League are there? A: Eight.
- Q: A Steel-type move ussed on a Fire-type Pokemon will be...? A: Not Very Effective.
- Q: The name of TM28 is Tombstony. A: What's that?
- Q: Who are you about to battle? A: Any.
Blaine specializes in Fire-type Pokemon. He has a Lv. 47 Magmar, a Lv. 47 Rapidash, a Lv. 48 Arcanine, and a Lv. 47 Ninetales. This battle is fairly straightforward, if you haven't been skipping any trainer battles, you should be much stronger than Blaine at this point. All you need is the type advantage. You'll get the Volcano Badge and TM46 - Fire Blast for winning.
