You'll be introduced to the world of Pokemon by Professor Gary Oak. After choosing a look and name for yourself, you'll also be able to name your rival. You'll then find yourself in your room, and your rival will come up to greet you. Afteward, head downstairs and speak with your mother. She'll tell you to head to Professor Oak's lab, but he isn't there yet. Instead, head north out of town.

Here you'll see Professor Oak surrounded by a group of Pidgey. Depending on the version of the game you're playing, either Pikachu or Eevee will then approach you. Follow the instructions for your control scheme of choice to catch your starter Pokemon. Follow it back to Oak's lab and choose it from the table. You'll then have a chance to give it a nickname. Your rival will take Eevee if you have Pikachu or he'll take Pikachu if you have Eevee.

Route 1

Attempt to leave, and Professor Oak will stop you to give you a Pokedex. Afterward, exit the building and your mother will give you a Town Map. Head north on Route 1 and you'll see Pokemon running wild in tall grass. Unlike past Pokemon games, you won't be able to battle wild Pokemon. Instead, you can approach Wild Pokemon and throw Pokeballs write away to catch them. Feel free to give it a try, because you`start out with 50 Pokeballs.

Viridian City

Continue north and enter Viridian City. Head northeast to the Poke Mart and speak to the clerk outside the door. He'll give you a Parcel to bring back to Professor Oak. Choose "Yes" to go straight back to the lab or walk back yourself if you'd like. Speak to Professor Oak and he'll give you some Razz Berries. Upon trying to leave, your rival will challenge you to a battle.

He'll have a Lv. 6 version of whichever starter you don't have. Defeat him in battle and then exit the lab and head back north out of town. Speak to the lady standing here to get some Sportswear. She'll also show you how to play with your Pokemon. Head north onto Route 1 and speak with the Poke Mart Clerk to get a Potion. Further along the route you'll be challenged by Youngster Ronny and his Rattata. Defeat him and head north to Viridian City.

After a brief cutscene with your rival, head to the Pokemon Center in Viridian City and speak to the lady behind the counter to heal your team. If you want another Potion, you can find one hidden behind a tree and fence a little bit east of town. Head north onto Route 2 and north through the buliding to Viridian Forest.

Head left to battle another trainer. Continue left and you'll see a Poke Ball sitting in front of a tree. These are called Item Balls and hold various items. This particular one will net you 5 Poke Balls. Feel free to catch any and all Pokemon you see, catching Pokemon you want is made much easier in these games since you can see them in the overworld and catch them more quickly. Either way, head back to the right and battle Bug Catcher Rick. You'll find another Item Ball containing 3 Razz Berries.

Head north to battle Lass Britanny. After defeating her, continue northeast and you'll find another hidden Potion behind a tree on the northern route. Head back down to face Bug Catcher Doug and Lass Jocelyn to the west. Head southeast from here to find a Lure in an Item Ball. Head northwest from here and defeat Bug Catcher Sammy in a battle. Exit the forest to the north and briefly cross Route 2 before heading into Pewter City.

Upon entering the city, you'll be greeted by your rival who will give you 5 Potions. There's not a whole lot to do before heading to the gym to the northwest. You can speak to the lady outside the museum and get a Big Pearl for watching her Slowpoke if you'd like. Afteward, you can enter the gym as long as you've caught any Water or Grass type Pokemon and have it in your party when you arrive. Oddish and Bulbasaur are your best bet, both can be caught in Viridian Forest. You'll now be able to move your box Pokemon to your party at any time, so this shouldn't be a problem.

There are two trainers to defeat before the gym leader. They each have a single Lv. 7 Geodude. After defeating them both (or skipping them if you wish) you can challenge Gym Leader Brock. He has a Lv. 11 Geodude and a Lv. 12 Onix. This is a fairly straightforward battle. He'll likely out-level you at this point unless you do some grinding, but you can make up for that with a Grass type, even if its level is in the single digits. After winning you'll get the Boulder Badge and TM01 - Headbutt.
